BookJetty on Ruby On Rails

MON, 25 SEP 2006

After downloaded the latest version of Hibernate, Spring and Acegi Security, configuring the long list of XML configurations, just about to start working on the next enhancement for BookJetty; I decided to make a U-turn to re-code BookJetty from scratch again using Ruby On Rails (RoR).

I know it is crazy, and it sounds like a lot more work at first thought, but my developer instinct assured me, with RoR, I’ll be able to save a lot more time in the future. Besides, I’ll be able to learn more about RoR, so what the heck.

Strange, somehow, I get more excited.

Exactly what I faced with and felt like 4 months ago when I decided to recode ping.sg

In the end it was well worth the time of recoding as now the site is more expandable and managable.

Good luck in the process.

I did the same for my app, and it was worth it in the end too. However, I have some two pieces of cautious advice to give (that may avoid some hair-pulling later):

1) Aim for feature parity with whatever you’re replacing first before adding any new features.

2) Resist the temptation to add new features before all known bugs are fixed.

Can’t wait to see this site in rails!

I started with rails right at the beginning when everybody else around me was going the java/php way. Am I glad that I stuck to my decision coz I’m beginning to see the fruits of my labour. Knowing that there are many interest in porting applications into rails assures me even further.

This is a great site. Very useful web app. Just to let you know that I found your site thru the E27 podcast.

Thanks Jason. I’m glad that I’m on RoR too. :D

And I can’t wait either for next BookJetty release. It’s getting really close…I’m very excited, hopefully can finish it by end of this week.
